In 2023, the "Aji Culture of the Minamiboso Region—Namerou, Sanga-yaki, Tataki, and Sashimi—" was proudly certified under the "Traditional 100-Year Foods: Regional Cuisine Continuing Since the Edo Period", a century-long food culture designation determined by the Agency for Cultural Affairs!
In the Minamiboso area, surrounded by abundant seas, there has long been a culture of enjoying delicious fish even in times before refrigeration. Among them, the most famous local aji dish is "namerou." This soul food is said to have originated when fishermen prepared easy-to-eat meals for themselves aboard their boats. Fresh aji is minced together with miso and condiments to bring out its umami flavor. It was named "namerou" because the taste is so good that "you'll want to lick your plate clean."
To further spread these locally rooted aji dishes, the Minamiboso City Tourism Association took the lead in creating a new local gourmet brand in 2023: "Minamiboso Uma-Aji." The entire region has come together to offer a variety of menus, from casual eat-in options to accommodation plans that can be thoroughly enjoyed, as well as souvenir products. We can expect even greater excitement to come!
